The way you speak to yourself matters: How self-talk affects your mind, body & energy💚
The Way You Speak to Yourself Matters
This week, I’ve been reflecting on something that often goes unnoticed and I was reminded of it’s importance after pulling an oracle card at the beginning of the week…
✨The way we speak to ourselves.✨
Not the conversations we have out loud with other people (although also very important), but the quiet, internal dialogue running in the background of our day.
➡️Those thoughts we have on repeat.
➡️The automatic responses.
➡️The words we don’t always question.
Over time, those words begin to shape far more than we realise.
Your Mind Is Always Listening
Your brain is constantly taking in information and looking for patterns. When certain thoughts are repeated often enough, they actually begin to feel true - even if they’re not!
✨This is how self-talk becomes powerful.✨
If your inner voice is critical, impatient or unkind, your body doesn’t separate that from reality - instead it responds.
Tension builds, your nervous system becomes more alert and you may feel on edge, overwhelmed or emotionally drained. Not because something is “wrong”… but because your body is responding to the messages it’s receiving.
Self-Talk & Your Nervous System
There is a strong connection between your thoughts and your nervous system. When your inner dialogue is harsh or negative, it can keep your body in a heightened state similar to fight or flight.
➡️Overthinking.
➡️Self-doubt.
➡️Pressure.
All of these things can signal to your body that something isn’t safe (dysregulated nervous system).
But the opposite is also true, when your thoughts become more supportive, gentle and balanced, your body begins to respond differently. It softens and starts to feel safer.
✔️And this is where change begins (regulated nervous system).
This Isn’t a Weakness
If your self-talk has been more critical than kind lately, please know this:
✨This isn’t a flaw, it is often something that has been learned over time.✨
Through life experiences, expectations and even conditioning from a very young age.
Your mind has simply been trying to protect you and keep you safe in the only way it knows how. But guess what!?! - those patterns can be gently changed.🤍
Rewiring Begins with Awareness
You don’t need to completely change every single thought overnight. In fact, trying to do that can just create even more pressure on yourself.
Instead, it starts with awareness and noticing.
💚Catching the thought.
💚Pausing for a moment.
And asking yourself:
➡️Would I say this to someone I care about?
If the answer is NO (and often that is the case that we wouldn’t dream of talking to somebody else that way), that’s your opportunity to shift.
Simple Ways to Support Your Self-Talk
This doesn’t have to be complicated. Small, consistent changes can begin to rewire the brain over time.
Some gentle practices you can try:
🤍Replacing “I’m not good enough” with “I’m doing my best”
🤍Speaking to yourself as you would a close friend
🤍Writing down your thoughts to create space from them
🤍Using affirmations that feel supportive and realistic
🤍Placing a hand on your heart and offering yourself reassurance
🤍Noticing when your inner voice becomes critical - without judgement
These small moments really do matter and repetition creates new patterns.
The Impact of Kindness
When you begin to shift your self-talk, you may notice:
✔️An overall sense of calm in your body
✔️Less tension and overwhelm
✔️More clarity in your thoughts
✔️A deeper sense of self-trust
It isn’t about being positive all the time or pretending to be positive - it’s about being supportive to yourself. Be kind and gentle – your words really do matter.
How Reiki Can Help
Sometimes, shifting your thoughts alone can feel difficult, especially if your nervous system is already overwhelmed.
This is where Reiki can offer support, by helping your body move into a more relaxed, balanced state, it creates the conditions needed for change.
When your body feels safe, your mind can begin to soften too. It’s not about forcing anything - it’s about allowing.
A Gentle Reflection
If you take one just thing from this today, let it be this:
✨You are always listening to yourself and your words matter.✨
So perhaps today, you choose one small shift. One kinder thought or softer response and see how that feels.
As always, if you would like any support with this, please feel free to get in touch.
Love & light,
Donna Marie 💚
