Why Joy Matters: How laughter & lightness support your Energy and wellbeing

This week, I wanted my blog to bring in something a little lighter after pulling the Merriment oracle card on Monday… ✨JOY✨

This is something that is so often overlooked when we think about healing, self-care and wellbeing. But in truth, it plays a much bigger role than we may realise.

Joy Is Not a Luxury

So often, we treat joy as something we will get to later, when everything is done. When life feels calmer or, when we feel we’ve “earned it”.

But joy isn’t something extra or a reward we have to earn. It’s something your body and energy actually need. Joy, happiness and laughter are all a natural part of human behaviour.

The Impact of Laughter on the Body

Laughter isn’t just a reaction - it’s an actual release. It has been said that laughter is the best type of medicine and some even say the endorphins that laughing releases can actually assist with pain relief!

It can also help to:

🤍reduce tension in the body
🤍calm the nervous system
🤍 release built-up stress
🤍create an overall sense of ease

Even a small moment of genuine laughter can shift how you feel immediately.

Joy & Your Energy

When you experience joy, your energy changes. It becomes lighter, more open and expansive. And that doesn’t just affect you, it affects the people around you too.

Energy is felt - your mood, your presence, your state, it all ripples outward. Have you ever walked into a room and heard someone laughing and it has automatically made you smile or feel lighter inside? This is your energy being affected by their energy - it genuinely has a contagious effect!

 Reconnecting with Your Inner Child

Often, the easiest way to access joy is through playfulness and reconnecting with your inner child. Rediscovering what it is you used to love to do as a child. Expressing creativity for example by painting, colouring, drawing, dancing, going for a bike ride or swimming just for fun are all great ways to bring joy into your life (and this is just a small handful of things that you can do – as long as you love it, it will being you joy and happiness 🥰).

Try asking yourself:

➡️What did I used to enjoy?
➡️What made me genuinely laugh?
➡️What felt simple and fun?

There is such true healing to  be found in those answers and I would encourage you to start doing things that bring you joy and see just how much it impacts your day.

Self-Care Can Be Light

Self-care isn’t always about rest and stillness (although this can be nice on occasion). Sometimes, it’s about:

🤍laughing with someone
🤍doing something playful
🤍allowing yourself to be light and carefree

A Gentle Reflection

If things have felt heavy recently or overwhelming, this is your reminder:

✨You are allowed to feel joy✨ ✨ You are allowed to laugh✨

You are allowed to experience lightness - even in the middle of everything else that is going on.

Affirmation

“I appreciate the funny and uplifting aspects of my life and choose to laugh often.”

Bringing It Back to You

This week, try to create one small moment of joy each day. It doesn’t have to be big - just something that makes you smile.

Because those moments matter more than you think, letting go of the idea that everything has to be serious all the time. As adults we can often shoulder such responsibility that it is like carrying a heavy weight around with us, day after day. Even one small change could help your energy feel so much lighter.

Love & light,

Donna Marie 💚
