Why slowing down feels so hard: pacing, nervous system overload and protecting your energy💚

Why slowing down feels so hard

This week’s message from Seahorse Spirit - Watch and Wait  felt incredibly aligned, because so many people right now are mentally overstimulated, emotionally overwhelmed and completely exhausted… yet still pushing themselves to keep going.

I have had so many conversations with people and you know what, I completely  understand what they are saying. Especially when you live with chronic illness, chronic stress or emotional burnout, where pacing becomes essential - not optional!

Pacing is more than just resting

I think sometimes when people hear the word “rest” they immediately think of sleep (and of course that is very important too!). But true rest -  true nervous system support goes so much deeper than that.

Pacing is finding a true balance that works for your life to be able to function without leading to crashes, burnout and overwhelm.

For me personally, pacing and in effect resting is about retreating when I need to. Not exactly shutting down from life, but intentionally creating space to care for my whole self so I can continue functioning without becoming completely overwhelmed, fatigued or physically unwell.

Because when I ignore the signs and continue pushing through, my body will eventually force me to stop.

And I know many people can probably relate to that!

We live in a constant state of “doing”

Modern life encourages us to stay busy, to keep producing, responding, achieving… And somewhere along the way, many of us forget how to simply be.

Our nervous system was never designed to stay in a constant state of stress and stimulation, yet so many people are living permanently in fight or flight mode without even realising it.

✨Overthinking.
✨Constant people pleasing.
✨Feeling emotionally reactive.
✨Struggling to switch off.
✨Feeling exhausted but unable to truly rest.

💚These can all be signs that your nervous system is overloaded and struggling.💚

 Slowing down can feel uncomfortable

This is the part people don’t often talk about. For many, slowing down doesn’t immediately feel relaxing and it can actually feel uncomfortable. When the nervous system is used to chaos, busyness or hypervigilance, stillness can feel unfamiliar.

Your brain may tell you:

➡️you should be doing more
➡️you’re falling behind
➡️you’re being lazy
➡️you can rest later

But constantly overriding your body’s signals (because it does try to tell us) comes at a cost.🥺

Protecting your energy is essential

One thing I have learned over the last few years and I know I mention it a lot but that is because it is super important - protecting your energy is not selfish, it is absolutely necessary!

For me, this has looked like:

💚leaning deeply into self-Reiki
💚spending time in nature
💚slowing down enough to notice the beauty around me
💚gratitude practices
💚dancing freely whenever I can
💚resting without guilt
💚reducing overstimulation (from people and environments)
💚and creating boundaries around what drains my energy - learning to say NO!

✨These small practices help bring me back to myself again, so I can function in this busy world.✨

The Chakras & energy balance

Our energy centres also knowns as the chakras can become imbalanced when we are under prolonged emotional stress, physical exhaustion or mental overwhelm. When energy becomes stagnant or depleted, we may feel disconnected, anxious, emotionally drained or physically fatigued.

This is where energy healing and Reiki can be incredibly supportive, Reiki helps to calm the nervous system, restore energetic balance and create a sense of safety within the body. It allows the body and mind space to soften and sometimes, that is exactly what we need most – to just be.

Slowing down creates clarity

Did you know that something powerful happens when we stop constantly reacting - we begin to hear ourselves again. We notice what truly matters and learn to recognise what is draining us.

And we reconnect with what genuinely supports our wellbeing. Slowing down is not falling behind, often, it is where healing begins.

A few gentle ways to support your nervous system

🤍Spend a few minutes outside in nature
🤍Take slow, deep breaths with a longer exhale
🤍Reduce noise and overstimulation where possible
🤍Place your hand on your heart and soften your shoulders
🤍Journal your thoughts rather than holding them inside
🤍Listen to calming music
🤍Rest before you reach complete exhaustion
🤍Work with grounding crystals like Amethyst, Lepidolite or smoky quartz
🤍Allow yourself moments of stillness without feeling guilt

Below are some journal prompts you can use to look at where your energy is being affected ✨

➡️What is currently draining my energy most?
➡️What helps me feel calm and safe?
➡️Where in my life do I need to slow down?
➡️Am I resting before burnout - or only after?
➡️What would supporting myself more gently look like to me?

A little reminder

✨You do not have to earn rest.

✨You do not have to push yourself to breaking point before slowing down.

✨And you do not need to carry everything alone.

Sometimes the most healing thing you can do is pause, breathe and come back to yourself.

A gentle invitation 🤍

If your nervous system has been feeling overwhelmed lately and you are craving calm, balance and support, Reiki can offer a safe and nurturing space to slow down and reconnect with yourself again.

You are always welcome to reach out if you feel called to explore energy healing further.

Love & light,

Donna Marie 💚
